# How to put two videos side by side

Left and right for a laptop or TV, one above the other for a phone. Add both clips, line them up, choose the sound and save one MP4, free and without uploading.

To put two videos side by side, select **Add photos and videos** above and pick both clips: in Landscape they sit left and right, in Story 9:16 one above the other. Trim one so they start together, switch off the sound you don’t need, and select **Export** for a single MP4 with both playing at once.

It works in any modern browser on a phone or a computer, and the clips never leave your device. If you already edit in iMovie or CapCut, their steps are further down. For three clips, borders and other split layouts, the [split screen video editor](https://collage.video/split-screen-video) has every option.

## Put two videos side by side in your browser

1. ### Pick the shape
Landscape 16:9 or Square places the clips left and right; Story 9:16 stacks them. The format buttons sit above Add photos and videos.
2. ### Add both clips at once
Select Add photos and videos and choose both. The first one you pick goes on the left (or on top); drag one onto the other to swap them.
3. ### Sync them
Tap the clip that started recording earlier and drag its Start slider until a shared moment, such as a clap or the first beat, matches in both halves.
4. ### Choose the audio
Tap the clip you don’t want to hear and switch its sound off, keep both for a duet, or add a song in the Music tab.
5. ### Export
Select Export, then Export video. The MP4 shows both clips playing at the same time.

## Left and right, or top and bottom?

The split cuts the frame in two, so each clip gets a window of a different shape. Side by side in a 1920×1080 frame gives each clip a 960×1080 window: taller than it is wide, which suits people filmed upright but trims the sides of landscape footage. Stacked in a 1080×1920 story gives each clip about 1080×960, close to the shape of a landscape clip, which is why stacking wastes the least picture on a phone.

* **Phone, Stories, Reels, TikTok:** Story 9:16 with **Two stacked**.
* **YouTube, a laptop or a TV:** Landscape 16:9 with **Side by side**.
* **A square feed post:** Square with Side by side; each half is 540×1080.

Whatever the shape, drag inside a cell to keep the subject in the middle of its half, and use Zoom only as much as you need.

## Syncing two videos

Two cameras never start at exactly the same instant. Find one moment both clips share (a clap, a door closing, the first note of a song) and trim the start of whichever clip reaches it later, so both hit it together. Press Space to play, then comma and full stop to step one frame at a time while you nudge the Start slider.

If one clip is longer, the collage runs as long as the longer one. In the Timing tab, **Loop** replays the short clip and **Freeze** holds its last frame; **Set length** cuts both to an exact time.

## Choosing whose sound plays

* **One person talking:** switch the other clip’s sound off (select it and press M).
* **A duet or a two-camera concert:** keep both, and lower the louder one’s Volume.
* **Silent comparison:** add a song under Music and choose Mute under Clip sound.

## In iMovie on a Mac

iMovie calls this a split-screen overlay. The steps from Apple’s iMovie for Mac guide:

1. Put the first clip in the timeline.
2. Select the second clip in the browser and drag it above the first clip in the timeline; let go when the green **Add** icon (+) appears.
3. If the overlay controls aren’t showing, click the **Video Overlay Settings** button above the viewer.
4. Choose **Split Screen** from the pop-up menu on the left, then pick **Left**, **Right**, **Top** or **Bottom** in the **Position** menu.
5. Click **Apply**, then **File** → **Share** to export.

On an iPhone, iMovie does the same from the **More** button (…) after **Add Media**; the [iPhone video collage guide](https://collage.video/how-to-make-a-video-collage-on-iphone) has the steps.

## In CapCut

1. Start a **New project** with the first clip.
2. Tap **Edit**, then **Overlay**, then **Add overlay**, and choose the second clip.
3. Pinch each clip so it fills half the frame and drag it into place.
4. Drag the overlay’s ends on the timeline so both clips run the same length, then tap **Export**.

CapCut lines the halves up by hand, so getting an exact 50/50 split takes some pinching. The browser editor above starts with a precise split and lets you swap, reframe and trim each half. ## Two videos side by side: questions

### How do I put two videos side by side on iPhone?

In iMovie, add the second clip with Add Media, tap More (…) and choose Split Screen. Or open this page in Safari, pick both clips from Photo Library and export; Share → Save Video puts the result in Photos.

### How do I put two videos side by side in CapCut?

Add the first clip, then Edit → Overlay → Add overlay for the second, and pinch each one to fill half the frame. Trim the overlay so both clips end together, then export.

### Can I put two videos side by side on TikTok?

Only with Duet, which pairs a new recording with a video already on TikTok. To pair two of your own clips, make the split here and upload the MP4.

### How do I sync two videos?

Find a moment both clips share, such as a clap, and trim the start of the clip that reaches it later until both hit it together. Step frame by frame with comma and full stop for precision.

### Is putting videos side by side the same as merging them?

No. Side by side shows both at once in one frame; merging plays one after the other. To merge clips on a phone, see [how to combine two videos on iPhone](https://collage.video/combine-two-videos-iphone).

### Will the side-by-side video lose quality?

The export is a new 1080p H.264 MP4, so each half is redrawn at the size it fills. Choose High quality in the export settings for the sharpest result.
