How to make a video collage in CapCut, Canva or InShot

Three popular apps, three different approaches: overlays in CapCut, grids in Canva, picture in picture in InShot. Steps, limits and watermarks compared.

Start a collage

1080×1920 · Stories, Reels, TikTok, Shorts

Or start from a template

35 layouts

Free · no watermark · nothing is uploaded

CapCut builds a video collage from overlays you resize by hand, Canva drops photos and videos into grids, and InShot layers clips with PIP; its Collage tool is for photos. All three can do it, with different amounts of manual work and different rules about logos and paid features.

If you just want a collage done quickly without an account or an app, the editor at the top of this page does it in the browser with ready-made templates and no logo.

The quick route: a template collage in the browser

  1. Add everything

Select Add photos and videos above and pick your clips and photos.

  2. Choose a template

The Layout tab has grids, split screens, picture in picture, polaroids, film strips and magazine pages.

  3. Finish and export

Add text and music, then select Export and Export video. No watermark, no ending clip.

CapCut: overlays

On the CapCut phone app (steps from CapCut’s own guide):

  1. Tap New project and choose your main video.
  2. Tap Edit on the bottom toolbar, then Overlay, then + Add overlay, and pick the next clip or photo.
  3. Pinch to resize it and drag it into place. Repeat for each cell, and drag the ends of each overlay track to set its timing.
  4. Tap Export.

On desktop, stack the clips on the timeline and resize each in the canvas; a Mask gives a clean split. CapCut says it doesn’t add a watermark to exports, but most templates end with a short clip carrying the CapCut logo; delete it from the end of the timeline before you export.

Canva: grids

  1. Start a video design (or a video collage template).
  2. In the side panel, open Elements and choose Grids.
  3. Drag photos or videos from Uploads into the grid spaces until they snap in.
  4. Add music from the Audio tab, then Share → Download → MP4 Video.

Canva’s free plan downloads video up to 1080p; elements marked Pro are watermarked unless you pay. Your files are uploaded to Canva to edit them.

InShot: PIP for clips, Collage for photos

InShot’s Collage is for photos (up to 20 per collage, according to its App Store listing). For videos, start a Video project and use PIP to add more clips as layers, then resize and position each. The free version may add an InShot logo to exports, which can be removed under its own rules or with a paid plan.

Which to choose

  • A quick collage, private, no logo: the browser editor on this page.
  • A longer edit with transitions, effects and auto-captions: CapCut.
  • A designed post with brand fonts and stock elements: Canva.
  • Simple phone edits you already do in InShot: its PIP tool.

CapCut, Canva and InShot collage FAQ

Why is my CapCut video collage not working?

Most often the overlays are on the wrong track or one clip is longer than the others. Check every overlay sits above the main clip on the timeline and trim the overlay ends to the same length. Or make the collage from a ready-made template here.

Does CapCut add a watermark to collages?

CapCut says it doesn’t watermark exports, but most templates end with a short CapCut logo clip. Delete that clip before exporting.

Can I put videos in a Canva grid?

Yes. Canva’s Grids and Frames accept both images and videos.

Does InShot’s Collage work with videos?

No, InShot’s Collage is for photos. Layer videos with PIP instead.

Do I need an account for any of these?

Canva needs one. This page doesn’t, and your files stay on your device.
