Can you merge videos in the Photos app?
No. Photos can trim, crop and adjust one clip at a time but can’t join two. Use iMovie, Apple’s free editor, to merge them.
Guide · with a free collage maker
One after the other with Apple’s free iMovie, or both at once in a split screen right here in Safari. Which one you need, and the steps for each.
To combine two videos on iPhone so they play one after the other, use Apple’s free iMovie: tap Start New Project, then Movie, select both clips and tap Create Movie, then share and save the result. The Photos app can trim and adjust a clip, but it can’t join two together.
If you want both videos on screen at the same time, side by side or one above the other, that is a split screen. The editor at the top of this page makes one in Safari without installing anything. Both routes are below.
This is the side-by-side route, using the editor at the top of this page. For one-after-the-other, see the iMovie steps below.
Leave Story 9:16 selected to stack the clips, or tap Square or Landscape to place them left and right.
Tap Add photos and videos, choose Photo Library, select the two clips and tap Add.
Tap a clip and drag Start so both begin on the same moment. Switch off the sound of the one you don’t want to hear.
Tap Export, then Export video. When it’s done, tap Share, then Save Video to put it in Photos.
Most people searching for this want one video that plays the first clip, then the second. iMovie is Apple’s free editor; install it from the App Store if it isn’t on your iPhone.
The small icon between the two clips is the transition. Tap it to choose a different one, or None for a straight cut. Add more clips the same way with the Add Media button.
No. Photos edits one clip at a time: trim, crop, straighten, filters. Memories builds a movie from a set of photos and videos automatically, with its own music and pacing, so it isn’t a reliable way to join two particular clips in a set order. Apple’s Clips app could join clips, but it was discontinued in October 2025.
A split screen keeps both clips playing together, which suits reactions, duets, before and after, and two angles of the same moment. The editor above does it in Safari: two clips stack top and bottom in a 9:16 story, or sit left and right in Landscape. iMovie can also do it with the Split Screen overlay, from the More button (…) after Add Media.
More layouts and sync tips are in how to put two videos side by side, and the split screen video editor opens with three-way splits too.
If one clip should play in a corner of the other, that is picture in picture. In iMovie choose Picture in Picture instead of Split Screen; here, use the picture in picture video editor. The iPhone’s own picture-in-picture setting is different: it shrinks a playing video so you can use other apps, and makes no new file.
No. Photos can trim, crop and adjust one clip at a time but can’t join two. Use iMovie, Apple’s free editor, to merge them.
To show them side by side, use this page in Safari: nothing to install and nothing uploaded. To play them one after the other you need an editing app such as iMovie, which is free.
Open the split screen video editor in Safari, add both clips and export. In iMovie, add the second clip with Add Media, tap More (…) and choose Split Screen.
A split screen made here is a new 1080p MP4, with each half drawn at the size it fills; choose High quality in the export settings for the sharpest result.
Yes. iMovie takes as many clips in a row as you like, and a collage here shows up to nine at once.
